Walk through Mount Kilimanjaro can be categorized in 5 land scape. Thinking of the vegetation during mount Kilimanjaro climb is important.

There are 5 vegetation types. The vegetation zones on MT Kilimanjaro are created by the climate on the Kilimanjaro.

Varying on the altitude you are and the route you are climbing, you will be surrounded by dense rainforest or Alpine Desert. Machame Route, is a bit more demanding but the most scenic route. It meet 3 other route on the later days. (See all routes Vegetation’s)

5 Vegetation Walking Up mount Kilimanjaro

1 Cultivation In these region you we be driving through farms of coffee and other crops.

These region is mainly before the entrance to the mount Kilimanjaro National park Gate.

2 The Tropical Rain-forest There are many gates to enter Kilimanjaro National Park.

The Machame, Marangu and Mweka Gate are located at an altitude of about 1,800 to 3,000 meters so your hike begins in the “tropical mountain rain-forest”.

The walk on paths of lush green. Up on the trees you will see groups of monkeys making their way through the leaf canopy every now and then.Its full of many flowers  with big trees sport white monkey blue monkey colobus monkey water buffalo giraffe is humid about 19 to 25 °C (around 68 to 77 °F), rainfalls are common here especially in the afternoon.

3 Moorland.

After another couple of hours  climb and some short breaks for lunch later, the thick rain forest begins to thin out.

At an altitude of 3,000 meters you have started the moorland.

Shorter trees and an increasing number of ferns, mosses are typical in this vegetation zone.

Moreover it becomes slightly chillier. You are at around temperature of 15 to 20 °C (59 to 68 °F) when you reach the first camp.

4 Alpine desert.

After the moorland, the start of stone desert have impressive views. By now you are at an altitude of about 4,000 meters.

The ascent is less steep and you’re walking on paths across seemingly endless expanses and scree fields towards Kibo or the Uhuru Peak.

The vegetation in the stone desert is very sparse. Moreover at the border to moorland you will see unique plant species such as giant groundsel they can be hundreds of years old.

5 Eternal ice

You will see the eternal ice, glaciers on Mt Kilimanjaro right next to you on the summit day. These glaciers are thousands of year old.

Moreover their surfaces have decreased sharply over the past decades and glaciers are most likely

to completely disappear in a few years.

You will walk partly on ice and snow, depending on the route you have selected and the seasonal weather conditions on the Kilimanjaro mountain.
