Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Arusha. You will drive to the Machame Gate, and then embark on your first hike through the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. The day ends at Machame Camp, where you will settle in for the night.

Today, you’ll leave the rainforest and ascend into the moorland zone. The path offers incredible views of the mountain and the surrounding landscape, and you’ll reach Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau by the end of the day.

Today, you will continue your trek across the plateau and descend into the Great Barranco Valley. The landscape becomes more rugged and rocky as you make your way to Barranco Camp, located at the base of the Barranco Wall.

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Duration: 6-7 hours
  • Altitude Gain: From 3,850 m to 3,960 m

Highlights:

  • Alpine Desert: The terrain becomes drier and rockier.
  • Barranco Wall: Admire the dramatic Barranco Wall (climb it tomorrow).
  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp.

After a hearty breakfast, you will climb the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable ascent. The trail flattens out afterward as you continue to Karanga Camp, where you’ll rest for the night.

Today, you will continue your ascent to Barafu Camp. The terrain becomes more barren, and the altitude increases, so you will need to rest and prepare for the summit attempt the following day.

Activities:

  • Hiking: Trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp.

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Altitude Gain: From 4,035 m to 4,640 m

Highlights:

  • Alpine Desert: The landscape becomes drier with rocks and scree.
  • Summit Preparation: Rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally for the summit push.
  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp.

Overview:
This is the most demanding day of the trek. You will begin your summit push around midnight, with a steep ascent through the night to reach the summit at sunrise. After taking in the incredible views at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 m, you will descend to Mweka Camp for the night.

Activities:

  • Summit Push: Begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak at midnight.
  • Descent: After summiting, descend back to Mweka Camp.

Hiking Details:

  • Distance: 22 km (Round trip from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and back to Mweka Camp)
  • Duration: 12-14 hours
  • Altitude Gain: From 4,640 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) and descend back to 3,100 m

Highlights:

  • Summit Success: Reach the summit for sunrise and enjoy breathtaking views.
  • Panoramic Views: Views of glaciers, craters, and the African landscape below.
  • Accommodation: Mweka Camp.

Overview:
On the final day, you will descend through the rainforest from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. Once you reach the gate, your trek will be complete, and you will drive back to your hotel in Arusha to relax and celebrate your achievement.

  • Hiking: Trek from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate.
  • Transfer: Drive back to your hotel in Arusha (Summit Hotel).

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Altitude Loss: From 3,100 m to 1,800 m

Highlights:

  • Rainforest Descent: Enjoy a peaceful descent through the forest.
  • Completion: Celebrate your success at Mweka Gate before heading back to Arusha.
  • Accommodation: Summit Hotel, Arusha (End of the trek).
